Help Getting Started

Building a Web Site

First Things First… take a moment to learn the ABC’s of web-design & hosting

Domain Name

The domain name is the address of your website and should be a part of your email email address, so choose wisely.

Go for the .com extension. Most people will assume that extension anyway. If you're a non-profit, register both the .org and

the .com if possible.

Try not to use .biz -.info or anything that's not .com, .org or .net as they are not popular and are difficult to remember

Try to avoid dashes (-) and underscores ( _ ) in your domain name

Go for the shortest name possible and make sure it's easy to spell...you want your customers to be able to find you easily

Website Design

Websites make or break businesses and organizations. A professional and well designed website is a very important part of

your online presentation. Often your clients see your web page before they contact you.

Always keep it simple. Elaborate and complicated designs can be a distraction

Website Hosting

Hosting is when you put your website onto a server that is permanently connected to the Internet. This is how the rest of the world can get to your pages. Hosting companies are responsible for maintaining the servers with hardware and software  upgrades, and responsible for ensuring the connection to the Internet is always available.
When deciding on a host, don't pay too much and, don't pay too little! Most free sites will not allow you to have your own domain name (www.you.com) but instead, a domain name that includes the host name (i.e., www.freesite/you.com). In addition, will be required to keep various ads on your page...not the most professional option. On the expensive side, some
hosting companies can charge hundreds per month...unless you have a large web-based business, this should not be an option for you.

Content Checklist

If you hire a site designer make sure you give them the information needed to complete the job. Knowing what will be on the web site is necessary for the initial page design and will help the designer determine if additional pages will be needed. Below are a few suggestions for content:

Page Content Suggestions

The first step is deciding that you want a page…the second is selecting page content. The page designer can offer suggestions but you have to decide what information your clients will see when they visit your web page. Below are some suggestions for page content:

□ Basic Information
□ About your organization/business
□ Key People
□ Contact information
□ Other:
□ Activities and Events/Current Information
□ Calendar of events
□ Press releases and special events
□ Forms (general feedback)
□  Other Information (anything you want to communicate to your   clients/members)
□ Links to other pages
